Li-ion battery film mechanical measurements - This research focuses on measuring mechanical properties of Li-ion
battery electrode films, such as density, thickness, and elasticity.
Currently we are using acoustic resonances (finding the frequencies at which the films vibrate) to determine these
properties. Looking for shifts in the resonance frequency is one way to detect changes in the mechanical properties.
Measuring the mechanical properties of Li-ion electrode films is important for control in the manufacturing process
and to predict the performance of the battery. While there are other ways to find the mechanical properties of battery
electrodes, acoustic resonance measurements have the advantage of being non-destructive.
We are working on getting more repeatable results with our current resonance method. We are also exploring other acoustic
measurement methods that don't require clamping the film, so that our measurements could be integrated into the manufacturing process.
